Big River, Saskatchewan
Big River is located about 16 km west of Prince Albert National Park. Settled just north of the Province's extensive grain belt, Big River marks the transition from the more populated southern regions, to the northern wilderness region.
Except for some land cleared for farming and a few natural meadows, the town is surrounded by the Northern Boreal Forest and hundreds of lakes in every size from tiny to huge.
The majority of Saskatchewan's northern half remains undeveloped by humans. Big River is the portal to this vast area -- hence the town's slogan -- Gateway To The North. The flora and fauna of this region is both rich and diverse, reflecting the largely undamaged ecosystem.
Big River has always depended on its surrounding forests and lakes. It was originally established as a base for the lumber industry in the early 1900's. Commercial fishing was also a major industry.
Big River is now a thriving community with a population of about 1,600 people.
