Shannon's Music School

Where Music & the New Millennium Connect!

Meet the Director

Shannon Andrews has been studying music for a total of 20 years.  As a young child, Shannon's love for music became apparent, as her ear for music developed very quickly.

Shannon began her musical education at the age of ten with "The Academy of Musical Education" in Regina, Saskatchewan, Canada. There she studied piano with several teachers under the supervision of Sharon Dyksman (musical education director of the Academy). At age fourteen she was honored with a first place finish in the provincial Kawai Festival. She also had several placings in other classical and pop festivals.

Although Shannon does not compete to this day, she has had much success with several students over the years finishing well in both provincial and inter-provincial festival levels.

Shannon was once again honored to have the opportunity to be associated with her long time mentor -Sharon Dyksman- as she came on board as one of her rural satellite teachers for the Weyburn District of Saskatchewan in 1995.

Shannon became a member of the Academy of Music Association, a network of teachers across Saskatchewan that are working together to improve quality of musical education. Shannon even served as secretary of the AMA from 1997 to 1999.

Shannon has continued to advance  her musical studies upon her return to the Academy. She has obtained both intermediate and senior teaching certificates in both piano and organ.  She is a recognized teacher of the Technics Music Program. She has taught Kawai, Alfred's, Bastien, and Royal Conservatory of Music programs.

  Richard Heffner

Richard started his musical studies in piano in 1948 as young boy.  Over those early years  he participated in many recitals and music contests and usually obtained one's at most of these competitions. One of these competitions occurred in November 1956, when  Richard appeared on the 1956 "Ted Mack" Amateur hour in New York City  after winning in two performances on a local television station talent search earlier that fall.  He was given the nod in one of the earlier shows  from a talent scout which resulted in his appearance on this Amateur Hour.

In 1960,  he entered Wichita University as a music student enrolled in Music Education and majoring in Piano.  During those next six years,  while enrolled in the university,  he studied privately,  with a jazz pianist.  This type of instruction was not available through the university so Richard extended his education beyond the university 's scope.  As he completed his studies at the university,  he taught many students both at the university and in his home.  He graduated in 1966 with a Bachelor's of Music Education from Wichita university (now Wichita State University).

Upon finishing University,  Richard  served in the U.S. Army Signal Corps,  taught in public schools, performed in musical quartets and other groups,  worked in television broadcasting, cable TV and sales,  and taught piano privately for years.

He has also upgraded his musical education by going back to Wichita State University in  1973, enrolled in Graduate Music Studies  and majored in Piano Performance with a 3.6 GPA.  He has also performed for wedding receptions,  piano bars and other types of performances such as clubs, dances, receptions and numerous stage performances for fund raising events.  During all these years he has continued to study jazz and update his performance library of popular and current hits.

In 1999,  Vista Sales and Marketing, Inc. produced "Heffner's List,"  an inspiring collection of music that tastefully and beautifully  displays Richard profound enjoyment of music and his incredible talent.  SMS highly recommends it for any music lover.  His inspiring arrangements will imprint your mind forever as he glides over the ivories.  SMS is honoured to bring aboard a teacher of Richard's talents and enthusiasm for music.
